SOUTH FULTON REBELS

Head Coach: Dave Wilson
Conference: Prairieland
2009 Record: 8-4 (5-1)
IHSA Enrollment: 247

South Fulton Must Gel Quickly in New Conference

The Rebels made a deep run in the IHSA Class 1A playoffs in 2009, getting beat by the eventual state champion Tuscola Warriors in the quarterfinals (38-0). It wasn't a very good start for South Fulton football last fall, opening up their season at 0-2, with a lopsided loss to Central/Southeastern in week one (61-28), and a loss the following week to Pittsfield/Griggsville-Perry (32-13).

In fact, the Rebels began (2-3), and had to go overtime with Havana in week five to get to .500. South Fulton won that game (28-22), the start of a six-game winning streak, and ending up as one of the final eight teams left in Class 1A.

"Must replace offensive and defensive line and a starting quarterback. A difficult challenge to face. We must come together quickly as a team," head coach Dave Wilson said. Chase Bair (6'0" 170 Sr.) should take over the reigns at quarterback, after an all-conference season at wide receiver. He had 28 receptions for 548 yards and 6 touchdowns. Dakota Vaughn (6'0" 180 Sr. WR) had 40 receptions for 643 yards and 11 touchdowns last year. In the backfield, Ty Cowin (6'0" 195 Sr. RB) averaged 4.6 yards/carry and scored 8 touchdowns. Both Cowin and Vaughn were all-conference selections in the Southeast division of the West Prairie Trail.

Defensively, Chase Bair is back in the secondary. He 3 interceptions last season. Clinton Hammond (6'0" 165 Sr.) and Ryan Kost (5'9" 150 Sr.) are also returning starters at defensive back. Hammond recorded 45 tackles, 9 for loss, and 3 interceptions. Kost had one interception.

Dakota Vaughn returns at linebacker, after notching 60 tackles (14 for loss). Ty Cowin returns at linebacker (56 tackles, 4 for loss, 3 interceptions), as well as Braden Wherley (5'10" 180 Jr.). Wherley had 50 tackles, 9 for loss last season as a sophomore. Quenten Markley (6'0" 155 Sr.) returns at Outside Linebacker.

Newcomers for the Rebels will be; Dylan Watson (6'4" 220 Sr.), Clay Crouse (5'10" 180 Sr.), Myles Taylor (6'4" 220 Jr.), Justin Cleer (6'0" 265 Sr.), Gabe Kenderick (6'1" 245 Sr.), Joey Southwood (6'3" 195 Jr.), Luke Crowe (5'10" 220 So.), Tyler Fulton (5'8" 165 So.), and Kyle Adkins (6'0" 155 So.).

South Fulton returns to the Prairieland Conference in football, a league they have participated in all other sports. This is a new-look Prairieland football conference, with its last season of existence in 2005. "I believe it will be very competitive and challenging every week." The league is broken into a black division and a blue division. South Fulton is a part of the black division with Abingdon, B-PC/A, North Fulton, Lewistown, and Peoria Heights. All six teams in this division were apart of the Prairieland in 2005.

Dave Wilson is entering his sixth season as head coach of the Rebels. His record is (29-22) in that time. He has led the Rebels to the playoffs in four of his five seasons. He played college football at Western Illinois University in 1985 as a walk-on.

Assistant coaches are; Aaron Wilson (defensive coordinator), Derek Uffelmann (Quarterbacks/Fresh-Soph head coach), Mike Griglione (Line), Matt Klaska (Assistant/Junior High coach), and Matt Kluthe (Assistant/Junior High coach).

South Fulton is an all-sports co-op between Astoria High School and (Table Grove) V.I.T. High School.

V.I.T. stands for Vermont, Ipava, and Table Grove.
